The objective of the current study was to propose a sensitivity analysis of a 3D left ventricle model in order to assess the influence of parameters on myocardial mechanical dispersion. A finite element model of LV electro-mechanical activity was proposed and a screening method was used to evaluate the sensitivity of model parameters on the standard deviation of time to peak strain. Results highlight the importance of propagation parameters associated with septal and lateral segments activation. Simulated curves were compared to (...) myocardial strains, obtained from echocardiography of one healthy subject and one patient diagnosed with intraventricular dyssynchrony and coronary artery disease. Results show a close match between simulation and clinical strains and illustrate the model ability to reproduce myocardial strains in the context of intraventricular dyssynchrony. (shrink)

This edition collects all the surviving evidence for the fifth-century BCE Athenian sophist Antiphon and presents it together with a translation and a full commentary, which assesses its reliability and significance. Although Antiphon is not as familiar a figure as sophists such as Protagoras and Gorgias, substantial fragments have survived from his major works, On Truth and On Concord, including extensive remains preserved on papyrus. In addition, information about his doctrines is preserved by ancient writers ranging in time from Aristotle (...) to Simplicius and beyond. The introduction provides a brief sketch of Antiphon, his works, and his place in the fifth-century BCE sophistic movement, including his important contribution to the contemporary debate over the relation of law and nature. It also deals with the controversial question of the identity of Antiphon the sophist in relation to Antiphon of Rhamnus and other men of the same name. (shrink)

Historians of science can benefit from thinking more deeply about land. Scholarly emphasis on the geographies of scientific knowledge has become pervasive since the “spatial turn” of the late 1990s. At the same time, the history of science has increasingly intersected with environmental history. Despite these growing connections, historians of science have been slow to embrace a core concern of environmental history: land. While space and place now have a rich literature in the historiography of science, land appears in histories (...) of science in more scattered, incidental ways – largely as a place where science may occur or be applied. More than just a unit of ground, land is analytically connected to a web of questions about labor, property, governance, identity, and environmental change explored by environmental historians, geographers, and political ecologists. This article examines what historians of science – particularly, but not exclusively, historians of the field and environmental sciences – have to gain by taking land more seriously. A reexamination of the Rain Forest Project, a radioecology study initiated by systems ecologist Howard Thomas Odum in what is today El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico, serves as a case in point. Viewing this field site as land reframes ecologists’ fieldwork as a form of land use, highlighting its place within regimes of land tenure, its connections with other communities’ uses of the land, and its persistent local legacies. The Monographs produced by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) apply rigorous procedures for the scientific review and evaluation of carcinogenic hazards by independent experts. The Preamble to the IARC Monographs, which outlines these procedures, was updated in 2019, following recommendations of a 2018 expert Advisory Group. This article presents the key features of the updated Preamble, a major milestone that will enable IARC to take advantage of recent scientific and procedural advances made during the 12 years since (...) the last Preamble amendments. The updated Preamble formalizes important developments already being pioneered in the Monographs Programme. These developments were taken forward in a clarified and strengthened process for identifying, reviewing, evaluating and integrating evidence to identify causes of human cancer. The advancements adopted include strengthening of systematic review methodologies; greater emphasis on mechanistic evidence, based on key characteristics of carcinogens; greater consideration of quality and informativeness in the critical evaluation of epidemiological studies, including their exposure assessment methods; improved harmonization of evaluation criteria for the different evidence streams; and a single-step process of integrating evidence on cancer in humans, cancer in experimental animals and mechanisms for reaching overall evaluations. In all, the updated Preamble underpins a stronger and more transparent method for the identification of carcinogenic hazards, the essential first step in cancer prevention. (shrink)

L'article constitue la publication du décor peint des deux tombes de la nécropole de Kom el-Chougafa à Alexandrie. Ces deux tombes, creusées dans les parois d'une salle du second hypogée de Kom el-Chougafa, sont connues depuis le début du siècle, mais leur décor peint, en majeure partie effacé, n'a pu être rendu visible que récemment grâce à l'emploi de la lumière dans le spectre ultraviolet. Chaque tombe est constituée d'une niche qui se compose d'un sarcophage, surmonté de trois parois, et (...) d'un plafond. L'ensemble des parties était recouvert d'un enduit peint. La surface des trois parois est divisée en deux registres : le registre supérieur porte des peintures de style égyptien, tandis que le registre inférieur porte des peintures de style grec. Les scènes égyptiennes représentent, de gauche à droite, l'offrande du faucon (promesse d'immortalité), l'embaumement d'Osiris et la résurrection du dieu. Les scènes grecques, quant à elles, représentent, toujours de gauche à droite, Perséphone cueillant des fleurs avec ses compagnes, l'enlève ment de Perséphone, son retour du monde des morts vers celui des vivants. La correspondance des deux séries de scènes superposées est évidente, comme les têtes de Méduse et de Bès sur la partie/supérieure des pilastres. Différente du « style mixte » — personnages de style grec inclus dans une scène égyptienne — qui caractérise certaines représentations funéraires de l'Alexandrie impériale comme du Fayoum, cette combinaison iconographique est unique. En base al estudio empírico de los discursos de desarrollo presentes en actores clave del Gran Concepción, Chile, este artículo plantea algunos lineamientos teóricos a partir del mismo. Se distinguen dos temas centrales a la hora de hablar del par desarrollo-sustentabilidad: el poder de las representaciones sociales y la interrogante acerca del nivel de representatividad de las decisiones que se toman en relación a estos asuntos. Esto conecta las temáticas ambientales con una demanda de ciudadanía y con la pregunta acerca (...) de las prioridades sociales que como país aceptamos. (shrink)
